Why we (should) never stop learning about others

The only thing constant in life is change. I find that true about everything especially ourselves and the people dearest to us. The best way to understand why you will spend the rest of your life learning about people you already know is realizing that you have to do exactly the same with yourself — the You that you live with literarily every passing moment.

Do you ever surprise yourself… like you do something and tell yourself — “wow, that’s new”. I do! I find the way i have evolved over the years quite interesting. Some of the things i enjoy doing before, i no longer have interest in. Every now and then, i discover a new interest, strength, weakness etc. Sometimes a new dream. Its been a journey of self discovery every day and I’m certain its the same for everyone too. An African proverb says that “when the rhythm of the drum beat changes, the dance step must adapt”. Life is designed to always change the beating of the drum, so we must always adapt. And as we adapt, we need to take note and learn about the changes that are happening not just around us, but within us. That’s how we grow and become better versions of ourselves.

Life is designed to always change the beating of the drum, so we must always adapt. And as we adapt, we need to take note and learn

You can expect the same from others as well. Your spouse is evolving and learning new things about him/herself too. So are your parents, siblings, friends, colleagues and neighbors. You don’t really have much of a choice than to commit to learning about them as you are doing about yourself. I guess my point is that you should expect people to change and be open to learning about the new version of themselves that they present to you so that you can adapt and relate with them as appropriate.

Life indeed is a teacher; the more we live, the more we have to learn!
